The Kalinago Council is in the process of establishing a new permit system intended to regulate visits and stays within the Kalinago Territory by individuals who are not members of the Kalinago community. The group says this initiative aims to strengthen the protection of the community’s cultural heritage, ancestral lands, and overall well-being.
According to the proposed framework, non-Kalinago visitors will need to secure a permit from the Kalinago Council prior to their visit or stay in the Territory.
A council press release explained that this move is part of the broader effort to reinforce the rights and responsibilities of the Kalinago people as custodians of their land, ensuring that all activities taking place within the territory are respectful of their traditions, values, and safety.
The Kalinago Council emphasizes that the new permit requirement is not intended to exclude outsiders but to safeguard their sovereignty and promote sustainable use of their resources. A representative from the Council stated, “This is not about exclusion—it is about protection, sovereignty, and sustainability. Our lands are sacred, and as we welcome respectful engagement, we must also ensure that our community’s well-being, security, and environment are not compromised.”
Once the permit system is finalized, it will include specific rules regarding entry, length of stay, and permissible activities within the Territory. It will also feature provisions to facilitate educational, research, and collaborative projects that respect and uphold Kalinago cultural values and adhere to the Kalinago Act.
Community members and interested parties are encouraged to stay informed about the progress of this policy and to participate in discussions as the Council moves closer to its implementation.
