We mourn the passing of our colleague, mentor and friend, Dr Denis Solomon, on Sunday 27 August 2023. Dr Solomon was 89 years old.
Dr Denis Solomon was a retired Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and French Language, former diplomat, translator and conference interpreter, former member of the AIIC - Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conférence, columnist and editorial writer.
Dr Solomon was a Queen's Royal College (QRC) old boy, the holder of the BA Modern and Mediaeval Languages (University of Cambridge, 1957), an MA from Columbia University (1966), the thesis of which was entitled "The System of Predication in the Speech of Trinidad: A Quantitative Study of Decreolization", and the PhD Linguistics (UWI, St Augustine, 1989), the thesis being entitled "Syntax and Semantics in Caribbean Creole", supervised by Professor Lawrence D. Carrington.
Dr Solomon was the inspiration behind our UWI STA Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics - DMLL's Postgraduate Diploma in Interpreting Techniques. He was fluent in English, English Creole, French Creole, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian.
He was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques of the Ministère de l'Education Nationale, République Française in 1984 (along with Randolph Hezekiah, Senior Lecturer in French Literature, and also later awarded to Prof Beverly-Anne Carter, Senior Lecturer in French Language and TESOL, and our current Head, Eric Maitrejean in 2009).
Pictured here is his groundbreaking work entitled 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒅: 𝑨 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒓 (1993), which is a description of the English-lexicon Creole of Trinidad and a comparison of its phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon with those of the dialect of standard English. The work also covers aspects of sociolinguistic variation in Trinidadian speech.
