After a four-decade push to include the Kweyol language in academic instruction, sister island St Lucia is geared to set forth a program for 2024/25. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre made the historic announcement on Emancipation Day in August 2022.
After two years of development and refinement, Minister for Education, Shawn Edward, confirmed that the pilot program will commence in 15 of the local schools. This signifies the first time that school children on the island will be receiving instruction in the Kweyol language in the academic setting.
“By including Kwéyòl instructions in the national school curriculum, the government is demonstrating its commitment to preserving our heritage for future generations,” said officials via statement.
