UNESCO Recognizes the Contribution of Professor O'brillant Damus to Local Knowledge and Sustainable Development

The UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University warmly congratulates Professor O'brillant Damus, a researcher affiliated with the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, on the recognition of his valuable contributions by UNESCO.

In its letter dated 20 October 2026, UNESCO acknowledges his active participation in the UNESCO Chairs network, his scholarly contributions published under the auspices of UNESCO, and his commitment to promoting local and Indigenous knowledge.

Of particular importance is his approach as a “peasant-researcher” (paysan-chercheur), which highlights the value of knowledge developed through practical experience and passed down through generations. His work draws attention to the importance of local knowledge in understanding soils, conserving biodiversity, protecting traditional seeds, and promoting sustainable land use.

His commitment to recognizing local knowledge and developing alternative educational approaches resonates with the principles of sustainable development and the need to strengthen connections between scientific research, local communities, and environmental education.

Dear Professor Damus, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! We wish you continued success, inspiration, and new opportunities to advance research and dialogue on local knowledge, environmental sustainability, and the role of communities in protecting our natural heritage.
