AFGHANISTAN MAKES HISTORY IN ST. VINCENT WITH FIRST WIN OVER AUSTRALIA

History was made in St.Vincent and the Grenadines on June 22 as Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs in an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 match.

At the highly energetic Arnos Vale Stadium, Afghanistan batted first and scored 148/6 off 20 overs.

The opening batsmen for Afghanistan – Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran held a strong partnership of 118 runs and set a firm foundation for a competitive score.

In reply, Australia’s batting remained generally unstable against the consistent bowling attack of the Afghans. Despite Glenn Maxwell’s 59, the rest of the batting lineup fell to the pressure, and the Aussies were kept at 127 all out off 19.2 overs.

Cricket’s governing body – the International Cricket Council ICC has confirmed that the win is Afghanistan’s first over cricket-heavyweight, Australia in international cricket.

The win means the path to the semi-finals remains open for a number of teams currently competing in the Super 8 round of the world cup.

Afghanistan’s next match will be against Bangladesh on Monday, June 24 at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) at 8:30 p.m.

Austr Australia’s next match will be against India on Monday, June 24, at Gros Islet, St Lucia.
