Nevis ?

When the Royal Caribbean Cruise line ship, ‘Jewel Of The Seas’, docked in Port Zante in Basseterre, St. Kitts for the first time on April 2, the man at the helm was Nevis’ own Harry Yearwood, who proudly described it as his most memorable moment to date.
Chief Officer, Nevisian Harry Yearwood, standing on the bridge of the ‘Jewel Of The Seas’.
And it is indeed significant, as despite the fact that 34% of all cruises worldwide are in the Caribbean, there are very few Caribbean officers on cruise ships. Yearwood’s ultimate goal is to dock at Port Zante as the Captain of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship one day.
Harry Yearwood is the son of Alastair and Clare Yearwood and grew up in the village of Westbury on Nevis. As a young man, he attended Maude Crosse Preparatory School and then later the Lynn Jeffers High School. Following high school, Yearwood attended the first Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW)95 certification course, arranged by the Department of Maritime Affairs, and run by Chief Port Pilot, Captain Ludell Harvey-Lloyd.
The STCW95 Certificate is an internationally-recognised certificate that is mandatory for anyone working in the maritime industry.
To further his marine certification, Yearwood travelled to Fort Lauderdale where he achieved his 200 Ton Offshore Yacht Masters Licence. This enabled him to work as the mate on a 120-foot mega yacht for six months, after which he returned to Nevis and worked on the Fishing Charter Boat ‘Sea Brat’ and the Charter Catamaran ‘Caona’ for two years.
After gaining two years of experience there, he attended the National Maritime College of Ireland in Cork, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nautical Science.
He has since worked 13 years for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on a number of ships, ‘Majesty of the Seas’, ‘Adventure of the Seas’, ‘Quantum of the Seas’, ‘Radiance of the Seas’ and ‘Wonder of the Seas’, moving his way up through the officer ranks to his present position of Chief Officer (3rd in command) on the ‘Jewel of the Seas’.
